Sophie Molineux Set for Big Comeback as Renegades Prepare for High-Pressure Melbourne Derby

Melbourne Renegades have received a major lift ahead of the high-voltage Melbourne Derby on November 16 at Junction Oval, with captain Sophie Molineux finally returning to lead the side for the first time this WBBL season. The 27-year-old all-rounder has recovered from her quad injury and replaces fast bowler Sara Kennedy in the matchday squad.

Molineux’s return comes at the perfect moment for the defending champions, who are eager to bounce back after their defeat to the Adelaide Strikers and set the tone for the first of two Melbourne derbies in WBBL 11.

Earlier this season, the Renegades opted to rest Molineux following a minor quad strain — a precautionary move after her heavy workload during Australia’s ODI World Cup campaign. Given her previous knee and foot injuries, the medical team was determined to avoid any unnecessary risks.

This year marks her comeback after knee surgery in January, and though she battled knee soreness last season, her value to the team has always been undeniable. She was the Renegades’ leading wicket-taker last season with 16 wickets in just seven matches, alongside scoring 140 quick runs at a strike rate of 155 — performances that helped guide the club to its first ever WBBL title.

During her absence, vice-captain Georgia Wareham stepped in as skipper and delivered outstanding performances when the team needed them most. A long-time part of the leadership group, Wareham adapted instantly to the captaincy role.

The Renegades opened their WBBL 11 campaign in style with a convincing win over Brisbane Heat, highlighted by Wareham’s Player-of-the-Match heroics: 3/12, 16 off 13 balls, and two catches* — a complete all-round show of control and tactical awareness.

In their next match against Sydney Thunder, Renegades showed tremendous fight. Chasing 149, they collapsed to 73/5, but Wareham produced a stunning rescue act, smashing 58 off 32 balls to turn the game around. Earlier in the match, her 2/25 kept the Thunder to a par score, sealing another influential performance.

Now, with Sophie Molineux returning as captain and Wareham in superb form, the Melbourne Renegades enter a crucial stretch of their title defense. The combination of Molineux’s experience and match-winning bowling with Wareham’s dynamic all-round impact gives the champions a strong, balanced core heading into a high-stakes derby clash.
