Jess Jonassen Makes WBBL History: First Player to Reach 150 Matches

In a moment that underscores both longevity and excellence, Jess Jonassen has written herself into the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) record books by becoming the first player ever to play 150 matches.

The milestone was achieved on 15 November 2025, as the Brisbane Heat captain led her side against Elyse Villani’s Hobart Hurricanes at Drummoyne Oval, Sydney. For Jonassen — a cricketer who has been a pillar of consistency and class since her WBBL debut in the league’s inaugural season — the venue was a fitting stage for the achievement.

Jonassen’s relationship with the Heat dates back to 5 December 2015, when she first wore the teal cap against Melbourne Stars. Over her 149 games before this landmark, she has claimed 180 wickets at an average of 19.31, with an economy rate of 6.61, solidifying her reputation as one of the league’s most dependable left-arm spinners.

Her match-winning spells include seven four-wicket hauls, and her best bowling performance — 4 for 13 in four overs — came against the Sydney Thunder on 16 November 2019, again at Drummoyne Oval.

But Jonassen is more than just a bowler. She’s a genuine all-rounder. With the bat, she has quietly racked up 2,259 runs in 131 innings, boasting a strike rate of 115.84 and a batting average of 24.55. She has scored six half-centuries, including a memorable unbeaten 67 off 52 balls against the Adelaide Strikers at the Gabba on 19 December 2015, a knock that helped Heat to an eight-wicket win and earned her the Player of the Match crown.

In July 2020, Jonassen was appointed captain of the Brisbane Heat, guiding a team that blended seasoned pros and emerging talent. Under her leadership, the Heat secured back-to-back WBBL titles in 2018–19 and 2019–20.

This season (WBBL 11) hasn’t been easy so far — Heat have lost their opening two games, first to Melbourne Renegades in a rain-affected match, then to the Perth Scorchers by 23 runs. Jonassen’s personal stats this season may not shine — she has just 8 runs and 1 wicket — but her impact remains far larger than the numbers suggest.

Reaching 150 matches is more than just a number. It’s a tribute to her resilience, professionalism, and calm leadership. Jess Jonassen has built a legacy founded on trust, teamwork, and tenacity — qualities that have made her a guiding force for generations of Australian cricketers.

As the Heat took the field at Drummoyne Oval, history quietly unfolded — a reminder that in Jonassen, Australian cricket continues to embody the perfect balance of experience and excellence.
